Mandurah cosmetic dentist explains about 3 ways to care for your porcelain veneers.

Our Mandurah dentists suggest some interesting ways to care for your Veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin shells intricately custom made and bonded to the front of your natural teeth to enhance their shape, colour and alignment.

  • Maintain good oral hygiene – brush gently twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss between the teeth to remove any food particles and plaque. Always pay special attention to the junction where the veneers met the gum and in between the teeth. Avoid using abrasives such as charcoal toothpaste or bicarb powder to clean your veneers as these will scratch the glossy surfaces, leaving your veneer looking dull.
  • Avoid foods and drink that can stain – Although Porcelain veneers are very stain resistant due to their highly polished surface, you still want to reduce contact with food or drink that can cause staining. Things like coffee, tea and red wine are bad offenders. Rinsing with water after these can help reduce these potentially staining liquids from collecting and pooling around your veneers, allowing them to look whiter and pristine for longer.
  • Protect your veneers from damage – Wear a protective mouth appliance if you grind your teeth or regularly play contact sport. Grinding your teeth during sleep can chip the porcelain, cause premature wear and tear, and even worst, cause your veneer to fall off completely. If you are a grinder ask your dentist to make a nightguard to wear in your sleep to protect your veneers.
