Healthy gums are firm and pink in color. Gum disease starts when one does not have good oral hygiene habits.

Plaque builds and attacks your teeth and gums. Plaque is a soft, sticky film that contains bacteria such as streptococcus mutans. These are relatively easy to remove through proper brushing, flossing, and good oral hygiene habits. Left unattended, plaque hardens into tartar or calculus. The tartar irritates and inflames the gums, this is called gum disease. This causes the gums to recede. In time this recession of the gums can be so worse that the tips will show the jaw bone. Consequently, this causes the teeth to become loose.
