Types of Sleep dentistry
At Platinum Smile Dental, we have a variety of sleep sedation techniques to cater to your needs. Below are some of the methods we use:
Happy gas
Happy gas or Nitrous oxide (N2O), is a widely used local sedation technique that effectively relaxes patients and creates feelings of pleasure.
The gas is colorless and odorless and is safe for both adults and children. Administered under the supervision of your trained dentist Mandurah, happy gas quickly eases dental anxiety.
Happy gas is safe for patients of all ages and is popular among children.
IV sedation
IV sedation or Intravenous sedation is the administration of an anti-anxiety medication through injection. You are in a relaxed state but you can still answer your dentist’s questions. After the procedure, you will have a vague recollection of what happened once the sedative loses its effect.
At Platinum Smile Dental, we use a computer-guided injection system, the latest dental advancement in making needles at the dentist as painless as possible.
A computer controls the delivery of the local aesthetics solution under your pain tolerance. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the difference it makes to traditional methods.
While under IV sedation, your highly trained dentist Mandurah will constantly monitor your statistics. Your pulse and oxygen levels will be under observation to make sure you do not have a negative reaction to the sedative. Checking your blood pressure before and after the procedure will also be done. will also be checked before and after the procedure.
Pre-appointment Medication
You will need to take the tablet one hour before your scheduled appointment and have someone responsible provide transport to and from the clinic. The “relaxation’ effects can last for 6-8 hours
General Anaesthesia
General anaesthesia is used for multiple and complex dental procedures. This heavy sedation may cause the patient to be asleep during the procedure, and wake up after the procedure is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
This depends on the sleep dentistry method you need. Most of our sleep dentistry options will put you in a relaxed state but you should be able to respond to your dentist’s questions during the procedure. For general anaesthesia, however, you will be unconscious.
Will I remember the procedure after the sedative wears off?
You will have little to no memory of the procedure after the sedative wears off. This is so that your stress prior to the procedure will not cause you any further anxiety, making you more confident in your next visit
How long before the effects wear off?
The recovery period for the effects to wear off is usually 20-30 minutes. After this, you will be endorsed to your caretaker. We recommend taking a day off from work or school to fully recover. Some people can return to normal within 24 hours, but this is also dependent on the dental treatment you just had.
Most people feel refreshed and very relaxed. Some feel slight nausea, this is due to the fact they have not eaten and normally this goes away after some eating and having a little to water to drink.
Because of this, you should not drive for 24 hours after the sedation and we require that someone drive to the clinic and take you home after.
Will I feel pain wild under sedation?
No, you will not feel pain while under sedation. Even during the administration of the drug, we also use of painless injections to make the procedure zero-pain and comfortable.
Painless injections are done using a computer-guided injection system, the latest dental advancement in making needles at the dentist as painless as possible.
A computer controls the delivery of the local aesthetics solution under your pain tolerance. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the difference it makes to traditional methods.
What should I expect during and after IV sedation?
During your sedation, you will be in a relaxed, tranquil state but your body maintains control of its own breathing.
In order to start the sedation, the doctor will place a small cannula into a vein in your forearm or back of the hand. This is actually easy and all you might feel is a tiny scratch, if you are concerned about this part, you can have an anesthetic cream/patch placed on your arm an hour before the appointment so that you don’t even feel the scratch at all.
